Why:
The automotive industry has been moving from mechanical to digital. In 2014, this trend will accelerate with the arrival of platforms for automobile applications. Significant announcements are forthcoming from the mobile giants: Apple iOS in the Car; Google, Audi, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai and NVIDIA forge the Open Automotive Alliance, a global partnership committed to bringing the Android platform to cars; and, GM unveils its new app platform with a suite of components for developers to use in crafting their apps.
In the future of transportation, applications will have a significant role and a special need. This is Aps4Wheels time— from driving toll roads to identifying driver fatigue. Israeli companies are tackling these challenges. Transportation applications such as Waze (a community based traffic and navigation app) and IOnRoad (a free, augmented driving safety app) have gained wide international attention. Moovit (free public transit trip planner) and Get Taxi (taxi ordering service) are among the 20 most popular apps in the country.Recognizing these global and local trends, EcoMotion is encouraging the local community of developers and entrepreneurs to seize the opportunities in the transportation world, creating social and economical value.
EcoMotion is holding a Hackathon – Apps4Wheels – gathering entrepreneurs, developers and designers for a two day competition: developing the best new app for transportation.
